Solitude

What do we do to quiet our minds and keep perspective about life? Where do we go to relax, reflect, and meditate? How do we stay true to who we are when everybody is praising our teams and us? The Scripture above explains how Jesus accomplished this.
Jesus had a unique quality in His life that most of us miss. He valued solitude over popularity. In quiet reflection, free from the flattering crowds, He maintained clarity of thought about who He was, His values, and His life goals. He knew that it is easy to pander to a crowd of flattering people. He was more concerned with pleasing His Father in heaven.
Big Me, Little Team

I’ll never forget standing in the locker room with my Division 1 field hockey players and listening to their postgame chatter. I was their new assistant coach, we had just lost our first game, and I was anxious to see how they were doing.
To Save a Life - They are Judging Me Study

Summary
Jake and Amy go to the youth group meeting, and Amy immediately feels judged, first by Andrea, then the senior pastor and his son, and finally by other girls in the group. Amy decides to leave, and Jake chooses to stay and scolds the group for being judgmental.
Verse
“Don't criticize one another, brothers. He who criticizes a brother or judges his brother criticizes the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?” - James 4:11-12
Discussion Questions
60 Years and Counting
Established in 1954, FCA celebrates its 60th year of ministering to coaches and athletes.
Born to Lead
Every week, it seems like a new moral or ethical shortcoming tarnishes the reputation of yet another sports superstar. There's no need to name names or the charges. Enough ink has already been used reporting the allegations.
For better or worse, sports today provide one of the most visible platforms for modeling behavior. Yet, not everyone who stands on the pedestal wants the responsibility that comes with it. Some athletes even recoil at the idea of being a role model.
Still, there are others who give us hope. Men like University of Florida senior quarterback Tim Tebow, who welcomes and embraces the opportunity to make a positive impact.
The Richt Way
It all began with a blind date.
As a graduate assistant on the coaching staff at Florida State University, young Mark Richt, who had been striking out in relationships, expressed his desire to meet a “nice girl.” Overhearing his statement, the girlfriend of Richt’s roommate suggested that she might know the perfect woman for him: her own roommate, Katharyn Francis. Immediately she set up a time for the four of them to get together.

Through the Motions

I don’t usually listen to the radio in the car while I’m driving through the suburbs of Chicago. Typically I try to spend my time praying for FCA needs, Huddle Coaches, student-athletes and other family concerns. But one day, I decided to tune in for some music, and I was so glad I did. I heard a song that pierced my heart in a powerful way. If you listen to Christian radio, you’ve probably heard it. It’s the song by Matthew West called “The Motions.” The chorus goes like this:
Take Courage

Readers' Theater: Illustration of a story told by Tony Campolo. The last gladiator competition in the Roman Coliseum was defeated by a little monk who was courageous enough to follow God's direction.
All: (heads down)
One: (looking through a dictionary) Courage: The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty. (turn head)
Two: (imitate holding a gun) Danger!
Three: (grab ankle) Pain!
Four: (show muscle) with firmness
Five: (hand out) without fear
One: (close book) bravery. So…
Two: (step into line) Take
Three: (step into line) Courage.
Four: (step into line) Be strong
Five: (step into line) and courageous.
Glory by Default
When God transforms a person’s life, it always leads people to realize His glory. In cases of true transformation at the work of His Holy Spirit, the power of God will be what is most noticed, not the power or personal glory of the individual whose life was changed.
There is a natural tendency in all of us to replace the word “God” with the word “me” when we read the verse above from Galatians 1:24. But there is incredible power in a life that shuns the pursuit of self and surrenders everything for the pursuit of God.

Unselfish Love

For small group
At least one person who can do push-ups (10 or 20 for each group member, depending on size of group).
Reward for each group member (hamburgers, food, candy, snacks)
In a small group of 5-7 people, ask for volunteers who can do 10 push-ups.
Then, ask those volunteers who can do 10 or 20 push-ups times the number of people in the group (70 total for example).
Out of those volunteers, ask the group to pick one person to do the total number of push-ups (Student A).
Have everyone form a circle and bring student A into the middle. Then show the rewards to everyone and explain the challenge below.
In the Cards
Matt Holliday has been around the block. As a 7-year major league veteran, he knows that the season is long and that patience is required. When the 2010 season didn’t start out as planned for the Cardinals outfielder widely known for swinging a hefty bat, he didn’t panic. In the face of low offensive numbers, Holliday stayed focused, kept working with his hitting coach (a fairly well-known former hitter named Mark McGwire), and, by mid-June, his perseverance was paying dividends. The three-time All-Star was again posting giant numbers at the plate. He slammed enough home runs and RBIs to earn his seventh NL Player of the Week award on June 21 and, in the process, earned a spot on his fourth MLB All-Star roster.

Bird Hunter

One player is the “hunter” and the others are “birds.” The hunter throws a ball at the birds, who may run freely about within the boundaries determined by the players before the start of the game. When the birds are hit with the ball, they become dogs and help the hunter by recovering and throwing the ball to the hunter. The hunter is the only one that may hit the birds. The last bird to be hit becomes the hunter for the next game. HI
Rubber-Band Faith

I love rubber bands. They are one of the greatest inventions ever! They are simple, practical, and useful. And, while there are many uses for them, one of the most basic functions of rubber bands is to hold a group of objects together.
I always keep a rubber band around my wrist. You never know when you might need one! But my habit took on new meaning this past year when my friend and FCA teammate, Donnie Dee, who also wears one around his wrist, offered me a challenge. When I asked him why he wore his rubber band, he said that it was a constant reminder that God wanted to stretch him daily. I was converted on the spot!

A Push in the Right Direction

In this account from the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is awakened by His disciples when a storm seems to be threatening their lives. In the middle of what they considered a frightening situation, Jesus asks them, “Where is your faith?”
Once at a summer camp, I observed three kids struggling to maneuver a canoe in a small pond. As the camp counselor sat on the shoreline and yelled directions to them, the children became confused and scared. From what I could tell, their feelings were probably brought on by the fact that they were not listening to the counselor or that they were just making wrong decisions. Nonetheless, they didn’t understand how to properly paddle and they lacked the faith that they would be safe.
